Experimental Support Services (ESS) support users conducting chemistry experiments within SRS, SPC, SSM, TRR groups, as well as those involved in specialized sample preparation for battery and catalysis experiments.

Our laboratories offer essential resources—including specialized equipment, glassware, fume hoods, gloveboxes, and dedicated workspaces—for wet chemistry and solid sample processing in support of synchrotron experiments.
Designed to facilitate independent sample preparation for synchrotron experiments.
Before Using Any ESS Facility
Each user planning to work in the Experimental Support Services laboratories must complete a few simple steps before starting any activity.
Access Control: All ESS laboratory rooms are secured with key-code entry. Access is granted only to users listed on an approved ESAF for the specific laboratory space and only for the time frame indicated within that ESAF. Users without a valid, active ESAF will not have entry privileges.
Submit Required ESAF Documentation
Every user group must include a detailed description of all laboratory work in the "Laboratory Use" section of their ESAF.
Users performing sample preparation but collecting data outside of Sector to which the laboratory space belongs must also submit a no-X-ray ESAF describing the laboratory work. Instructions for creating a no-X-ray ESAF can be found here.
Request Equipment or Workspace
To ensure availability, please submit an equipment or workspace request as soon as your beamtime or lab visit is confirmed. Laboratory resources are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Plan Sample Shipping and Receiving
All materials shipped to or from APS laboratories must follow Argonne’s approved packaging and labeling procedures.
Review the official APS sample-shipping guidelines before sending or receiving samples.
Manage Chemical Waste Properly
Users are responsible for identifying, labeling, and submitting waste containers for pickup at the end of their experiment. Please follow the ESS Waste Disposal Instructions and coordinate with lab manager for timely removal.
Complete Required Safety and Training
All users must complete standard APS safety training and the Sector 78 orientation.
Users who will handle materials in gloveboxes must receive an in-person glovebox orientation upon arrival; this certification is valid for two years.
If You Bring Electrical Equipment
Any personal or external electrical device must undergo inspection by APS Electrical Safety. Request an electrical inspection prior to use in the lab.
