Experimental Support Services Facilities
The Experimental Support Services (ESS) provide multiple specialized laboratories for sample preparation and experimental support at the Advanced Photon Source. These facilities enable safe and efficient handling of materials ranging from reactive electrochemical systems to general chemistry samples. Below you will find detailed information about each available laboratory space and its primary capabilities.
APS Electrochemistry Facility

The APS Electrochemistry Facility is dedicated to supporting electrochemical and operando research for battery and energy-storage materials. The lab provides 24/7 access for trained APS users and features gloveboxes, potentiostats, cyclers, ovens, presses, and specialized holders for beamline experiments. Researchers can prepare and test coin, pouch, and AMPIX cells for lithium, sodium, and zinc-based chemistries.
Catalysis & Air-Sensitive Preparation Lab

The Catalysis Laboratory supports the preparation and transfer of air-sensitive or reactive catalyst materials under inert atmosphere. Equipped with gloveboxes and dedicated tools, it enables safe handling of samples destined for X-ray spectroscopy, diffraction, and scattering studies. The space is open to all qualified APS users requiring specialized preparation for surface and catalysis science experiments.
Routine Chemistry Laboratories (433-D030 & 437-A020)

Two general-use chemistry laboratories, 433-D030 and 437-A020, provide standard facilities for non-air-sensitive preparation. Each lab is equipped with fume hoods, analytical balances, hotplates, glassware, and basic reagents for day-to-day sample work. These spaces support users conducting routine chemical preparation, cleaning, or solution synthesis in conjunction with APS beamline experiments.
